"Green Papaya" Salad

You may not have gotten a papaya in your CSA basket, but believe it or not, you may have the next best thing if you are a fan of spicy food. Green Papaya Salad is a staple of Thai cuisine, and while it's tough to find green papayas in most parts of Canada, both turnips and kolrabi make perfect substitutes.

Warning: this salad really is quite spicy. Not for the faint of mouth! If you love spicy food, however, this recipe might just rock your world.


  • 1 small turnip (or kolrabi, or green papaya)

  • 4 cloves fresh garlic

  • 3 Tbsp dried shrimp (you can leave this out if you can't find it - salad still tastes great)

  • 1 Thai chilli pepper

  • 4 Tbsp lime juice

  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 handful cherry tomatoes

  • 1 cup fresh green beans, cut into 2-inch pieces

  • 2 Tbsp coarsely chopped peanuts (or more, if you really like peanuts)


  1. Grate the turnip on a box grater (large setting).

  2. Grind garlic, dried shrimp, and Thai chilli pepper either in mortar and pestle, or with an immersion blender.

  3. Add lime juice, fish sauce, and sugar to spicy paste.

  4. Add the green beans, grated turnip, and cherry tomatoes to the spicy mixture, and toss everything together until all the vegetables are coated with the spicy sauce.

  5. Serve the salad topped with lots of peanuts sprinked on top. Yum!
